Adolescence is a bumpy ride. There's pressure ... messages about who and how to be ... changing bodies ... feelings like a roller coaster... All this and more as we journey toward our personal center to find out who we are and how we will relate to ourselves, others, the world and the Divine.
Wouldn't it be nice if our culture gave us a clear, life-serving road map? Some light on the path? But, for girls especially, au contraire.
Unwholesome cultural and corporate messages abound, telling us how think, feel and act as girl and women. We absorb unhealthy, un-doable “rules” about who we must be in order to be accepted, liked and valued.
Plus, mean things happen to girls and women - ranging from rude to brutal - which we (are socialized to) accept as normal life. We often don’t stand up for ourselves or for each other. We may just take it because we can’t imagine speaking up.
Also, have you noticed that adults often don’t treat kids and teens with respect and consideration? Kids notice, big time! They can learn positive ways to respond.
Some of the most insidious social conditioning girls absorb is to be quiet, to go along to get along, and to please others. Many girls have trouble speaking about about what's important to them.
Girls: Be strong and be yourself by finding your voice and claiming your values. Let's meet to:
through role plays, dialogue, interactive exercises, sharing our stories, artistic expression, ritual and a (if you choose) a cool media project.

VOICE AND VALUES CURRICULUM
· Voice: Healthy boundaries:
· Voice: Empowered communication
· Voice: Potential topics depending on the girls:
Some of this material is drawn from Marshall Rosenberg’s Nonviolent Communication (a.k.a., Compassionate Communication, or NVC) which I have studied, applied and taught to children and youth for over ten years.
We will use interactive exercises - such as role-plays, values clarification exercises, forced choice scenarios – as well as guided meditation, ritual and artistic expression. We will learn to make values-aligned decisions, be assertive, negotiate, prioritize, and speak our truth.
An optional parent meeting will be offered, aimed at helping you be effective partners for your daughters in this work.
